Can Everyone Wear White in Summer?

One of the most common things I hear from women who don’t receive white in their colour wallet is:

“But surely I can wear white in the summer with a tan?”

So, let’s talk about this very common thought — and let me share what all stylists know about wearing white, plus how to make it work if it isn’t naturally your best colour.

Each colour season receives around 36 recommended shades as a guide, and not everyone will have bright white included. When you hold a bright white fabric up to your face, one of two things usually happens:

  • It either lifts your complexion, creates contrast, and brightens your features…

  • Or it washes you out, overpowers your face, and leaves your complexion looking dull or tired.

Generally, softer, muted, warmer palettes — and even some deeper colour types — can find bright white a little too harsh.

So why do so many of us insist on wearing it once we get a summer tan?

Usually, it’s because we notice how beautiful white looks against sun-kissed skin on our arms, chest, or legs. White absolutely can enhance that golden glow. And in some cases, a slight tan can help even out a paler complexion too.

However, with more of us being mindful about protecting our skin from harmful UV rays, relying on a tan to “make white work” may not be the best solution.

And here’s the important question:

Are you looking at what happens to your face when you wear white?

Because this is often where the magic fades. Those same issues — looking washed out, tired, or overshadowed by the clothing — can still happen, even if the rest of your skin looks glowing.

But don’t worry — it’s definitely not the end of the world. With a few simple styling tricks, anyone can still enjoy a beautiful white summer dress.

First: Remember There Are Many Shades of White

When you have your colours analysed, you may receive:

  • Bright white

  • Soft white

  • Or sometimes both

And the good news is that white is a huge trend for 2026. (Although, as a mum of two boys, this doesn’t exactly fill me with excitement!)

Still, it’s fantastic news for anyone who loves wearing white in summer.

Different shades suit different colour types best, so take a look at the image below to see which whites are most flattering for each palette.

Second Tip: Keep the Neckline Open

If you decide to “break the rules” and wear white anyway, one of my top tips is to keep the neckline lower or more open.

Why? Because when more skin is visible near your face, the white has less chance to wash you out.

You could also try:

  • A white skirt or trousers paired with one of your best colours on top

  • A white dress with colourful accessories near the face

  • Softer white tones such as cream or ivory rather than optic bright white

Third Tip: Use Makeup & Jewellery Strategically

The right makeup shades and jewellery can completely transform how white looks on you.

If you have warm colouring:

  • Try coral and golden-toned makeup

  • Add touches of bronze, brown, or teal eyeliner

  • Choose gold jewellery to soften the contrast

If you have cooler colouring:

  • Rose pinks and soft lilac tones work beautifully

  • Silver jewellery can help harmonise the look

  • Cooler makeup shades soften the effect of white near the face
