Blue & Brown
This season we are seeing lot’s of brown. That’s not much of a suprise at this time of year, but it is being paired with blue for a fresh new look. If you have a wardrobe full, go and see what new combinations you can create. Today I am going to take a look at what’s on the high street and how to wear it for your colour type. And if you try this trend, why not go share it in Katie’s Style hub on Facebook. I’d love to see more of what your wearing.
Often we see blue as cool and red hot. However both blue and red has warmer shades and cooler shade. Cool blues include Navy, Cornflower and True Blue, Sky Blue and Blue Grey. Warmer shades include Chinese Blue, Lapis, Aquamarine and Cobalt.
Brown is a warmer shade, examples including Chocolate, Coffee Brown and Mahogany. Cooler shades include Black Brown, Mink and cocoa.
Whichever combination you choose, remember to place your best colour under your face. For example, Chocolate isn’t my best friend, but it is a neautral. So if I wear chocolate trousers with my best colour, cornflower blue, as a jumper, the colours will work for me and my light/cool complexion. Plus I have Bright as my tertiary colour type, so the light and dark contrast and help my eyes pop.
I go straight to the high street store websites and type in the latest trend. These are a few looks I’ve found; let’s discuss. River Island have this elevated smart-casual outfit — I adore the checked jacket. It would work brilliantly on someone like Claudia in The Traitors and is especially flattering for deeper colouring. Here they’ve freshened the look, making it feel lighter by pairing the jacket with a bright, pale blue jumper top, which lifts the whole outfit.
This pretty textured top from New Look is soft and muted. It leans into the blue-and-brown trend on its own, which means you could throw it on with cream, brown, black or grey and it would still read as stylish. I imagine it with light blue heels, jeans and a cream blazer for an easy, put-together look.
M&S have created this very simple and chic, elegant look that works effortlessly for the office. The light, soft blue Marino wool jumper will keep you warm while looking refined, beautifully paired with flannel pinstripe palazzo trousers for a polished silhouette.
There are a noticeable number of blue-and-brown patterned dresses around this season, from polka dots to florals and abstract prints if you look closely. I’ve chosen this A-line dress from Wolf & Badger — it could be nipped in at the waist with a slim gold belt to add shape and a touch of luxe. Wolf & Badger have many shapes and prints. But hurry, they are in the sale.
John Lewis have kept it casual with this easy-to-recreate look. Denim is blue, so use whatever denim you already have in your wardrobe to copy the style. You can always invest in accessories to lift and enhance the outfit. See below.
New Look has a few great pieces, including this eau de nil blue ribbon dress. Its pale ribbon against the black/brown backdrop creates a lovely contrast that would look especially striking on a bright day.
Trends come and go, and they don’t suit everyone. If you’re looking to simply add a nod to the trend or use your existing wardrobe to create a look inspired by this week’s blog, consider focusing on accessories. Here I’ve picked out Adidas trainers in soft light blue and warm brown or brown leather heels from M&S. paired with a smart Longchamp bag and navy gloves from John Lewis. The patterned bag is from Pia, where you can also find jewellery in complementary brown and blue tones. For finishing touches, paint your nails in blue or brown with OPI nail varnish, or add a dash of blue eyeliner and a brown lipstick from Mary Kay. (Ask me which make-up shades will suit you best.)
