3 ways to style a big jumper

It really is cold outside and with the threat of snow, it’s not a surprise that we are reaching for a big snuggly jumper. So here’s my top tips on wearing a big jumper with 3 top ways to wear a style a big knit.

Before we look at the style boards think about the quality of your jumper! Is it old, worn and grubby. Is it the right colour for you? And are you wearing the right scale for your frame.

If you are broad shouldered, big busted or a bigger size on the top half avoid really chunky thick knitted or heavy jumpers. They will add weight to you. Aim for simple or plain designs and something soft. If you are bigger on the bottom half and smaller on the top, you can take more volume, pattern and chunk.

Jumper and Jeans

My first look is with barrel jeans in a neutral colour way, try wide leg or bootcut depending on your body shape. This textural H&M jumper is lovely on its own or given a smart preppy lift with a white shirt collar. If you overheat like me, try a shirt collar instead of a full shirt. I’ve paired it with some chunky books and a bag in the same colour. Finish with a chunky necklace like this one from Trend Tonic which you can even have engraved. If you are a more dramatic or creative style personality you can swap neutral colours for a pop of colour. Try pink boots and pink belt for example.

Jumper and Leggings

Using more dramatic colour blocking, here I have paired leggings with a chunky jumper from Oliver Bonas. You could use either a plain colour legging or if you are creative mix it up with pattern as they recommend on there website. I have used the brown trim to pick brown ballet pumps and leggings and added a bit of shimmer with a silver moon bag and Trend Tonic lighting bolts. These finish touched make all the difference.

Jumper and Skirt

Looking for a more romantic look, wear your jumper with a full skirt or over a dress. Layer with thermal tights, a gorgous pair of cowgirl boots and this heart shape bag from Kurt Geiger. Radley, Dr Martin and Victoria secret also do heart shape bags, to name a few. Here I have pulled out the small pink trim of the jumper with these Trend Tonic earring and would wear a matching pink lip or blush to help bring the look together.

Jumpers from Mint Velvet, New Look, Free People, Apricot, Mundo and Roman

How do you decide if you should wear skinny leggings or wide-leg trousers with your jumper? Your body shape is the key factor to consider. Understanding your proportions and scale will help you choose whether to wear big baggy jeans, an A-line skirt with a tucked-in jumper, or skinny jeggings — and whether tucking in or leaving a top untucked will flatter your silhouette best.
